We help solve specific problems of customers in contract research projects or work together with our partners in national and international research programs. With our broad expertise, technologies developed in-house, a teamwork-based culture and an intense exchange of information we make added value for our customers our priority.

The main focus of our activities is to produce consistently high-quality nanoparticles and formulate them in different media. Our customers expect from us high-quality solutions for technologically challenging problems. We offer professional solutions based on the individual requirements profile of our customers. Examples are new thickener systems and formulations in the personal and home care area, specific diagnostic markers in the life sciences area, nanoscale structures for components of solar and fuel cells as well as security labels in the product protection area.

CAN GmbH works independently but is tightly integrated into a large network of internationally renowned scientists from the nanosciences, nanotechnology and life sciences. Close cooperation with groups working in Hamburg universities and research institutions gives the CAN GmbH staff access to a unique array of instruments that cover the full range of physicochemical methods of analysis. The focus of projects is not merely on collaborations in Hamburg but rather on the scientific content of current and future collaborations.

We have a diverse customer base that includes companies, research institutions and government organizations from all over the world. CAN GmbH was founded as a joint venture in November 2005 by the Free and Hansestadt Hamburg, the University of Hamburg as well as well-known industrial enterprises, which have combined to form a sponsor association. Among the members of the association, which is open to other companies, are Beiersdorf AG, Eppendorf AG, BODE Chemie GmbH and Merck KGaA as well as the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce and the Hamburger Sparkasse. Establishment of CAN GmbH as a Public Private Partnership created the structure needed to enable professional processing of research and development orders.

As of 31 December 2014, the annual turnover achieved from contract research and grant-funded projects equaled € 1.7 million. In the meantime, a team of 28 employees is working to solve our customers’ problems.
